Sitwell Street

Dated: 1987
Taken by: Guy Brighouse

The short stretch known as "Fishpond".  Mr Dick Dedman lived n the first house; his father and grandfather also lived here.  His grandfather was a Horsecab proprieter; his grandfather travelled up from Sittingborne in Kent, whether on foot or on horseback is not known, and got a job at Locko.  He could have been a journeyman sawyer on foot with a "mate"; such men travelled the country getting work here and there sawing trees to planks: a very skilled job which was done by building a saw frame over a pit; one man in the pit and the other on the tree trunk; and used a long crosscut saw, the tree beng firs and laid across the frame.  West Road was once called Sawpit Lane.
