The caption saying the building on the left now demolished is wrong.
It is the building on the right of the picture, including the archway, that has been demolished. This building was the malthouse in which barley was malted for the brewing of beer in the rear of the building on the left. The archway led up to a yard at the rear; the white-washed section of the remaining wall is a reminder of its previous function.
The three-sash window on the left of the picture is the window of the Malt Shovel lounge.
