Spondon Locomotive

Dated: 1878
Taken by: EB
SPONDON was one of a pair of 3ft gauge locomotives built in 1878 by the Hunslet Engine Company, Leeds (Works No.208) for building contractor Benton & Woodiwiss who were based in Sydney Street, Litchurch, Derby. They were however delivered direct to their Denton Waterworks, Audenshaw contract for Manchester Corporation. The other loco was works No. 207 and named BATEMAN. Why the locos were named thus is not known. By 1891 HE208 had moved to Chas. Baker & Sons for use on their Rishworth Moor reservoir contract for Wakefield Waterworks. After that job it was sold to William Murphy for a contract in Ireland. Historical information courtesy of the Industrial Railway Society.
