Spondon Heritage Centre

Spondon Historical Society is working towards having a permanent building, to house its collection of photographs, documents and artefacts.  We launched this project on Saturday 5 July in Spondon Village Hall with a display of the plans for a purpose-built Heritage Centre, and an exhibition of some of our photographs and maps.  We had 57 visitors, including councillors and traders. (See photos below)

Whether we achieve a new or a converted building, we will be applying for grants. To stand any chance of getting funding, we need to demonstrate the ongoing commitment of local people to this project.  We need you to care about Spondon's history, and what happens to our collection.  We are putting together a plan to liaise with schools and local groups.

We are grateful for the help we have received from Simon Foote, an architect from ProHelp), to put together these plans, and for the encouragement we received from councillors and local people on 5 July.

Comments we received on the day:

"An excellent idea - to preserve the past for the future generations to learn from.  The village of Barford in Warwickshire has embarked on a similar project to collect photos, documents, etc. relating to the history of the place.  No doubt other villages are doing the same.  It makes good sense for Spondon to lead the way with this."

"Very well set out and very interesting to speak to people who are very keen to keep the History of Spondon alive."

"Well done everyone.   We are very pleased with all maps photos willing ears to hear comments about all things.  Really enjoyed talking with Christine and Syd.  Can't wait to come back.  Well Done."

"We think that SHS do a great job with limited resources and deserve all the help and support that they can get."

"Very worth while and fascinating display.  I fully support this valuable project.  It will enhance the village both culturally and from the facility that will be added.  Mark Davis, Chair, STA"

"Exceedingly interesting displays.  Varied displays were good.  Most informative.  Good luck."

"Very interesting to see the history of the village we live in.  Would be lovely to see more of it more often. "

"Excellent exhibition and delighted to see the proposed Heritage Centre plans.  A wonderful asset for the community of Spondon.  I look forward to adding the Spondon Cricket Club archives to the centre.  Thank you. "

"Most interesting and very informative.  Thank you."

"I like history and I like the idea of the building of the archive building.  I will join the HS."

"Deepens the identity of Spondon."

Keep a watch on our website and in other local communications for further news as the project develops.
